- the Van Pelt s/t 7"/CDep (AMC#18 - Fall of 1997)
- Perhaps one of the purest marks of true art is the work's ability to draw
identification from the observer in conjunction with the capacity in which
the work breathes light into cherished halls too often darkened in tension
and the mundane. The Van Pelt serve as a touchstone for such divinely inspired
contemplation's. They speak in enigmatic tongues of both the afterglow and
all that the horizon yields. From acquittal to vengeance, their minimalist
dares to conjure memory1s diamonds & opals compel the listener to focus
beyond the spacious bass lines and undulating, sometimes tender, often poignant
rhythms. Guitars pick their points like lights in a void whose illumination
is only brought about through the subtly spoken word of Chris, the vocalist
who's words transfix with all the engrossing perception and bitter knowledge
of a prophet unbeknownst to himself. We yearn for this. In today's world of
popular music, nothing anymore feels real. Without design or purpose to anyone
but themselves, the Van Pelt answer this call. And their truest glory is that
they don't even know it.
